When I first heard that Brazil has proposed to build a dam on a tributary to the Amazon River, I almost thought it was a joke. Why would anyone do something so stupid? I mean, inviting environmental disaster just for inefficient electricity? Belo Monte will be a huge dam–the third largest in the world–just behind Three Gorges dam in China and Itaipu Dam on another river in Brazil and Paraguay. It will be built on the Xingu River, which is a tributary to the Amazon. The dam will flood 258 square miles of rainforest and take away the homes and lands of many hundreds of native peoples.
